Day 1The tour starts visiting the imposing archaeological site of Teotihuacán, considered to be the first urban city in Mesoamerica before the Spanish invasion with the largest concentration of inhabitants of the classic Mesoamerican period.
On arrival, you will be given a demonstration of the ancient process of making pulque, a traditional alcoholic drink in Mexico. Thick, slightly sweet, and milky, is brewed from the juice of the agave plant, or maguey, and roughly equivalent in strength to beer. It was the sacred drink of the Aztecs. You will enjoy a tasting of pulque and an opportunity to visit the arts and crafts center where local obsidian and jade are fashioned into jewelry, game boards, and decorative items, plus a selection of native clothing. The tour guides will then lead you into the area of the Pyramids where you will be able to explore such sites as the Temples of the Sun and Moon, the Temple of Quetzalcoatl, the Avenue of the Dead, the Citadel comprised of squares and temples, And the Palaces of Tetitla, Atetelco, and Quetzalpapalotl. Then we'll move on to the Shrine of our Lady of Guadalupe, the most visited religious site in Latin America. The Shrine was built in 1531 after a local peasant saw a vision of a girl surrounded by light, asking that a church be built in her honour. She identified herself as the Virgin Mary and left an image of herself imprinted miraculously on his peasant cloak. The shrine itself is a wonderful example of Spanish Baroque Art and is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Roman Catholics in the world.Day 2On the next day visit two of Mexico's hidden gems on a scenic coach drive to Cuernavaca, a beautiful small town, famous throughout Mexico for its gentle climate and lush vegetation. It is also known as Mexico's Beverly Hills as many of Mexico's rich and famous have their retreats there. Some of the attractions include the Palace of Cortes, built by the famous conquistador in the 16th century and the town's Cathedral, a fortress-like structure also built by Cortes for the Franciscan Order. Then sit back and enjoy the scenery as we continue on to Taxco. This pretty little town with cobbled streets, shady squares and vibrant marketplaces was once known throughout the world as the City of Silver. Here we visit a silver mine and learn how different alloys are made. After lunch there is plenty of time to explore this lively town and you will be able to snap up some of Mexico's beautiful jewellery and handicrafts before we board the coach for the drive back to Mexico City.
