Drive through the scenic Hungarian countryside before reaching Budapest, the ‘heart of Europe’ as it is affectionately known. Get into the mood with a hearty Hungarian lunch by the banks of the blue Danube (not included), before strolling the ancient alleyways and broad boulevards of this great imperial city.
Buda (the hilly western bank of the Danube) is the location of Buda Castle, the former royal palace, and offers stunning views of the Pest side. Castle Hill has a wonderful mix of medieval, baroque and 19th century styles, and then there’s St Matthias's Church with its multicoloured roof shingles and striking belfry. Centuries ago Buda was the seat of power but by the 19th century, the flatter Pest side began to grow in importance and the Hungarian parliament was built there. The building is a masterpiece of Gothic revival architecture and you will have the chance to study it in detail.
Such is Budapest’s beauty that it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, thanks to the banks of the Danube, the Buda Castle Quarter and the awe-inspiring Andrássy Avenue. See these sights and more as you explore the city in the afternoon.
Come along for an unforgettable Hungarian rhapsody.
