As the capital of Algarve, it was one of the areas of Portugal that stood longer under Muslim Moorish rule, and it’s an influence on the local culture and traditional architecture is undeniable. So much so that once it was conquered by the Portuguese kings, who called themselves kings of Portugal and the Algarves. Admire the Arco da Vila that dates back to the Moorish reign of the 12th century.
