Have fun exploring the second-biggest caverns in the world, the Grutas de García. We will also visit the Pink house museum, the eye museum, the Garcia village, the Craft school, the traditional bakery and the Huasteca canyon.
Cerro del Fraile is located just outside the small town of García and 30km from Monterrey within the Cumbres de Monterrey National Park. The mountain reaches 1,080 metres above sea level and towers 750 metres over the main access road. The entrance to the caves is located on the side of Cerro del Fraile. You can reach the entrance either by aerial tramway or by hiking a steep trail.
The caves probably formed between 50 and 60 million years ago and the presence of marine fossils such as sea shells and snail shells indicates that they were submerged in sea water. Two different paths start at the entrance. The first one runs 2.5km and the second for 1km and they are full of stalagmites and stalactites.
El salón de la luz (The Light Chamber) is the most spectacular formation named after the natural clarity of the rock on the ceiling. Other formations include: La Octava Maravilla (the eighth wonder), El Salón Del Aire (the air chamber), El mirador De La Mano (the hand viewpoint), El Nacimiento (the nativity), La Fuente Congelada (the frozen fountain), La Torre China (the chinese tower), El Teatro (the theatre) and El Árbol de Navidad (the christmas tree).
