Herrenchiemsee was to be the crown jewel of all palaces built by the Bavarian fairytale king Ludwig II.
An unfinished copy of the Palace of Versailles, it was the first project of the Moon King and also the last to start construction, after buying the island of Herreninsel for that purpose.
Also, the post-war Constitution of Germany was drafted on this island during August of 1948.
